In describing our day on the water, Gray Whale Galore would be a serious understatement! Gray Whales, Pacific White-Sided Dolphins and Common Dolphins made exciting appearances throughout the two trips we embarked on today. Starting off with the morning trip, one half dozen Pacific White-Sided Dolphins were followed by a mixture of ~10 Pacific White-Sided Dolphins and ~15 Common Dolphins, immediately upon our exit from the channel. We circled the dolphins briefly before spotting the first southbound Gray Whale of the day! This individual was followed by southbound Gray Whales #2, #3 and #4; all of which presented their flukes as they prepared for sounding dives! Along the way home, we passed by a pod of ~20 Pacific White-Sided Dolphins and a pair of northbound Gray Whales! This would be our second and third NORTHBOUND Gray Whales of the year!
During our afternoon trip, we encountered six southbound Gray Whales! Although they traveled in staggered formation, multiple whales could be seen around the boat at the same time! One Gray Whale in particular gave us the look of a lifetime as it approached, circled and MUGGED the boat over and over again! In between our fantastic baleen whale sightings, one half dozen Pacific White-Sided Dolphins and ~20 Common Dolphins were observed throughout the trip. It is worth mentioning that on BOTH trips, countless spouts were seen along the horizon that we did not have time to investigate. We were completely surrounded today and can’t wait to try our luck again in the morning! See you tomorrow, whale watchers.
