What a time to be on the water! Lately, we have enjoyed nothing but smooth conditions on the Pacific. During our first trip of the day, we encountered a pod of ~150 Common Dolphins off the coast of La Jolla and Torrey Pines. The dolphins alternated between travel-mode and feeding behavior. In between, we were happy to see them at our bow and surfing in our pressure wave. Along the outskirts of where we found the commons, a Minke Whale made a brief appearance beside us!
In the afternoon, we did not find any Common Dolphins but instead, we located a less common species of dolphin! A pod of ~20 Risso’s Dolphins gracefully swam down the coast of Point Loma and made numerous close passes by our vessel. We recently spotted this pod, including a newborn calf, just a few days ago! Our chances of spotting Risso’s Dolphins on any given day used to fall well under 1%! That statistic is steadily rising and we’re beginning to see them much more frequently. Maybe we will get lucky again and relocate them on our afternoon trip tomorrow. Until then, whale watchers!
