It’s a good thing the dolphins out there put on such a good show because today was absolutely packed with dolphins!
Our morning trip got a special encounter with the crew favorite, Risso’s dolphins! This was a smaller pod of about 15 but they were so mellow and just crushed by our boat for a long time, usually this species is a bit more boat shy. While hanging with the Risso’s we sighted a pod of Short beaked common dolphins, probably about 200 of them. It’s always fascinating to see them so close to each other – it really highlights the differences in physical appearance, the sleek slender bodies of common dolphin next to the robust, scarred and ragged bodies of Risso’s. Throughout the day we sighted 3 different species of dolphin, including some shorties blasting through the swells in a tight knit group right as the sun was setting.
