Today, we experienced a mixture of emotions during our afternoon trip. We headed up north towards La Jolla and encountered an entangled humpback whale hanging out in 136 feet of water! We were stoked to see a humpback whale however, concerned for its well being. Captain John notified Sea World Rescue and we waited on standby until another boat came to keep track of its location. It was going down for 8 minute dives! The humpback whale didn’t seem to be injured too badly so we’re glad we were able to locate the humpback whale and notify the right people to help it out! Then, we headed out west towards the drop-off and encountered an awesome pod of ~100 long-beaked common dolphins! The long-beaks were riding our bow and surfing in our wake! We love seeing common dolphins and we had a very happy canine passenger(a black lab) soaking it all in! 🙂 We have one more trip coming up so please stay tuned!
Our sunset trip was full of surprises! We headed out west towards the drop-off. About ~5 miles offshore, we stumbled upon a spunky pod of ~50 short-beaked common dolphins! We love seeing shorties because they are so active on the surface of the water! They love to leap out of the water and show off their acrobatics! Then, we continued on west, around 11 miles offshore, we started to turn in towards La Jolla. In about ~1200 feet of water, we encountered a crew favourite – RISSO’S dolphins! The pod of Risso’s consisted of about ~30 individuals which is a massive pod for this species of dolphin! They were leaping out of the water, right in front of a gorgeous sunset! It felt very magical to be on the water today with the Risso’s dolphins! We enjoyed a fiery red sunset with rainbow coloured clouds on the way into Mission Bay. Please join us soon!
**Update: Sea World rescue was able to cut the lines off the humpback whale and set it free! ❤
