We had a whale of a day on the Ohana!
We set out to the west and spotted two Humpbacks! They were traveling slowly to the south in only ~250-ft of water! We got amazing looks as they were up for 3-4 breaths with 7-min dive times! We were lucky enough to see double spouts and even double flukes! We continued to the south and found a huge pod of ~500-600 individuals traveling fast to the west and then to the north! We were completely surrounded with dolphins leaping all around us! There were plenty of cow/calf pairs in the mix! The pod slowed down and began to feed under diving birds! We could see the bait balls at the surface! Before we realized it, the Humpbacks caught up with us and the feeding frenzies! The glassy waters made for some excellent viewing of the dolphins! We can’t wait for the sunset trip!
WHAT A FINALE FOR THE DAY! Sunset was all sorts of spectacular! We set out to find animals and – man oh man! did we find them! Within the first few minutes of leaving the jetties we got a call from our friend Captain Michael alerting us to two southbound humpbacks! We spent an incredible time with these whales as they meandered southward to Mexico. Both sides of the boat got incredible views as the whales surfaced in the golden light of late afternoon. Their spouts illuminating like glittering golden geysers, and their deep skin reflecting the comforting warmth of fall sunshine. This just wasn’t enough for us so we went searching for a pod of dolphins we’d spotted earlier – we ended the night with a stunning feeding frenzy of hundreds of long beaked common dolphins and a multifaceted sunset that just kept changing the lower the sun got.
