OH BABY OH BABY! We got blue skies AND blue whales even… a BABY BLUE! Summer might just be landing soon!
This morning we headed out into the misty pacific with limited visibity and all the hope in the world! We searched and searched until we found a juvenile humpback way off shore accompanied by some common dolphins. We got good looks at the whale despite its low profile behavior – the sun started shining and everyone perked up.
This afternoon, we set back out on glassy seas and parting clouds made for stunning blue skies and saphire blue water. We found a couple pods of offshore bottlenose that were boisterous and so curious about us! They would zoom up to the bow swimming with their bellies pointed at the boat so they could eyeball all of us on the boat, a few seemed to be “wrestling” ramming into each other and leaping into the air repeatedly.
The real prize was our BLUE WHALE SIGHTING! We has a cow/calf blue whale cruising north WAY off shore – we’re fortunate to have many ocean going friends on the water – we were tipped off by Gone Whale Watching that there were blues to be found so, Captain Michael went the extra mile to run us down to the zone! We saw one lighter silvery whale and one steely grey whale cruising up the line. The stayed on the surface for a long time, allowing us great looks! We were lucky enough to see the flukes of these great whales as they went on dives. Blue whales are rare enough to see, but to see their flukes – even more rare! The MASSIVE 25 foot span of that tail is beyond breath taking. Blue whale calf’s are the worlds BIGGEST babies – starting life at 23 ft and 6,000 lbs – they can gain up to 10 lbs per hour and 250lbs per day just drinking moms milk.
Blue whales are super rare and never a sure thing – but you gotta risk it for the biscuit out here when it comes to once in a life time sightings. Not too long ago, we thought blue whales were extinct.
Get out here! We can’t wait to share this ocean magic with all of you.
