A feeding area of GIANTS straight out from Mission Bay today!
We headed way out west and found a racing pod of short‑beaked common dolphins, but barely spent any time with them — we got a call about 4 HUGE fin whales hanging out together.
These four were traveling as a group and staying on the surface for LONG intervals. One whale was noticeably larger, and its lower jaw was a more silvery grey instead of the usual bright white you see on fin whales.
After speaking with a blue whale specialist the other week, we learned that this grey lower jaw is one of the visible traits seen in blue whale × fin whale hybrids. Nothing confirmed (we’d need DNA), but very possibly…a Flue.
