After several days of killer whales in the area, we expected to find an ocean gone quiet.
When orcas move through, everything runs for their lives!
So imagine our surprise when we found TWO ENORMOUS humpback whales hanging out offshore!
They looked incredibly well-fed, relaxed, and honestly… maybe even pregnant? One may have been a female traveling with an escort, possibly just waiting for a calf to make its grand entrance.
With water temperatures still hovering around 75°, we’re starting to wonder if we could see some Baja-style breeding behavior right here off San Diego. We’ve already been spotting competition pods heading south, so anything feels possible right now.
As if that wasn’t enough, the ride home delivered another surprise: a huge pod of long-beaked common dolphins sweeping across the ocean in search of food. They were spread out in an impressive feeding formation, clearly on a mission.
And yet, despite their busy day, they still made time to race over and play with the boat.
No matter how many times we see it, it never feels ordinary.
There’s something magical about a wild animal choosing to be curious about you right back. 💙🐬🐋
