Friendly whales and FIERCE women today aboard the Privateer!
We headed out into the Pacific with a crew full of women to celebrate International Women’s Day—and the whales were feeling friendly!
Our first whale was a “little” fin whale… and by little, I mean about 50 feet long! Small for a fin whale, which can reach lengths of up to 90 feet. Another vessel sighted a larger fin whale just to the north, and there’s a good chance these two were an older cow–calf pair, with the calf learning to be more independent.
This curious youngster decided to check us out, popping up just 15 feet off our port side and logging calmly at the surface for several minutes. Our bottom finder was picking up what looked like krill or other particulate around 50 feet, so we believe this whale could have been feeding in the area.
On our way back to shore, we also got a few great looks at a humpback whale that was very interested in the small boats around us—sneaking up right behind them like an ocean prankster!
We’ve got whales!
Get out here so we can share them with you.
