One of those days that just steals your breath away! The sunset had some extra magic in store for us.
The fin whales are here! We’ve been seeing them consistently hanging out just beyond the drop-off. Our afternoon trip had some close passes from a large fin whale, and we got great looks all around. With stunning ocean conditions, we were able to see deep beneath the surface and make out a brilliant glow of turquoise reflecting through the water off the fin whale’s lower right jaw. Fin whales are one of the few whales with asymmetrical coloring—their lower right jaw is white, while the lower left is a dark gray like the rest of the body.
Our sunset trip started with a call about whales SUPER far away. We were a bit wary that we wouldn’t have time for good looks, but MAN were we wrong. We made it out to the fin zone early and got to spend amazing time with a cow-calf pair of fin whales that seems to be hanging around the area! These fins were so at ease with our boat that they surfaced right next to us many times. We were able to turn the motors off as they milled around the boat. The baby came up with so much energy—we even got to see its whole face!
All whale populations are still recovering from the whaling days, so seeing these little blubber nuggets is truly magical.
Please, let us share this magic with you!
