Calm seas and LOTS of whales!
The 9:00 morning tour was treated to 4 fin whales frolicking in the flat calm water! When we turned and looked to the north, we found a pod of about 75 short beaked common dolphins! The theme of seeing baby dolphins has carried over from the past week of trips with lots of mom/calf pairs! On the way back to the marina, we caught up with a rare dolphin for this region: pacific white sided dolphins! These splashy, flashy cetaceans really only visit the Southern California coast on the winter/spring. Even a rare bird fly by from a Cocos booby!
Our 1230 tour was much the same with fin whales and short beaked commons! We got a SUPER close pass from a juvenile fin whale who showed off its asymmetrical jaw coloration: white on the right, dark gray on the left. Common dolphins were extra acrobatic in the afternoon light with tail slaps and breaches on all sides of the boat!
Another beautiful day for a whale watch!
