Blue, Blue, Blue Monday – YES – 3 BLUE WHALES on our sunset trip, thanks to an amazing tip from Captain Michael, who was out on the smaller boats today. We’ve been missing the blues this summer, so spending an entire evening in golden light watching their spouts erupt from the depths — catching the sun like a glitter geyser — takes your breath away every time.
Our afternoon run north was just as memorable. We spent a long while with a sleepy humpback whale and a bunch of common dolphins that seemed to be punking the whale as it changed directions to avoid their rambunctious behavior.
On the way back to shore, we found so many dolphins — first a pod of bottlenose cruising through shallow water, only 170 ft deep. Then, just when we thought we were on the home stretch, a pod of 200+ long‑beaked common dolphins charged in and played all around our vessel, using our wake like the center stage of a surf competition to see who could catch the best ride.
