Our favorite friendly little ocean ghosts showed up tonight!
During our UNREAL sunset tour, a shockingly spunky pod of Risso’s dolphins glowed turquoise under the surface — those tall dorsals were visible from way off, but it’s that pale body color catching the last sunlight that makes them look like little ocean spirits. Since Risso’s are squid eaters and squid rise toward the surface at night, maybe they were feeling EXTRA feisty knowing a midnight buffet was on the way.
We also spent time with a very active pod of hunting short‑beaked common dolphins, with loads of tiny calves zooming around trying their best to keep up. Nothing better than baby dolphins learning the ropes.
San Diego sunsets + ghostly Risso’s + speedy commons = perfection.
