Blue seas and skies graced our Monday afternoon trip and we covered a whole lot of water today.
Skirting out to the drop-off and head almost as far north as our range. We found one of the biggest bird piles I’ve seen in a long time! With massive bait balls of tiny fish leaping out of the water driven up by unknown entities and islands of kelp patties with resting terns and gulls. But no cetaceans. It was certainly ideal conditions for minkes, humpbacks and fins!
Maximizing our time, the Privateer cruised south on the edge of the drop-off following our instincts to a bunch of splashes of the most beautiful pod of ~400 short-beaked common dolphins! They were so active and stunting with enormous 15ft leaps. The pod had tons of babies and acrobats and was a joy to observe today.
With so much bait and sea swell coming down, chances are good to see baleen whales on the sunset trip, here’s hoping.
