We headed out today wondering what the ocean might offer after several days of killer whales in the area—and when orcas roll through, most wildlife usually vanishes into the trenches.
NOT TODAY
We found one incredibly fast humpback with bright white pectoral fins slicing through the water like headlights. It was easy to track underwater and absolutely booking it at 6 knots—well above the usual 4‑knot cruise. This whale had somewhere to be.
Maybe south to Mexico.
Maybe away from the orcas that were spotted north of us this morning, heading toward San Diego.
Either way, this humpback had a mission, and we were lucky enough to witness its sprint through the blue.
