We are still enjoying the nice and calm sea conditions! Today, we cruised out of the Mission bay jetties and were excited to see a larger pod of ~30 Pacific white-sided dolphins! They were only a mile from shore trending to the south! Captain Michael maneuvered us around the lobster traps and got us amazing looks at this very social pod! We spotted several cow/calf pairs, and some large adults! There was also a fun, cheeky California sea lion that was hanging out with them. It porpoised out of the water as they surfaced near the boat. Pacific white-sided dolphins have a new scientific name! They are now Aethalodelphis obilquidens (pronounced EE th’ low DEL fis). The old nickname was Lags but now maybe it’s Aethalos!
We cruised out to the SW, cruised the drop-off and sighted a handful of Short-beaked Common dolphins that were likely feeding. They went on some long dives and were a bit tricky to find. The sunshine broke out for us on our ride home!
We hope to see you on trip soon!
Naturalist,
Vanessa
