🎶 “…Cause it’s a KILLER… killer in the night…” 🎶
We stayed with a pod of 8-13 killer whales until the very last light faded from the sky.
What unfolded was something few people will ever witness.
These orcas had successfully hunted and killed a fin whale. The second largest animal on Earth. Up to 85 feet long. Up to 200,000 pounds.
Fortunately, the carcass rested about 250 feet below the surface, sparing us from witnessing the carnage. Instead, we spent the entire day in the same spot as this family of orcas took turns diving to the whale, returning to the surface with pieces to share among the pod.
And what struck us most was how relaxed they were.
Well-fed, playful, and social.
They tail-slapped beside the bow, splashed delighted passengers, and repeatedly swam over to inspect us between family meal breaks.
It was a powerful reminder that the ocean doesn’t follow our rules.
Out here, life and death exist side by side. And today we witnessed one of nature’s most incredible predators thriving exactly as they should.
