Once in a life time behaviors 6 TIMES ON ONE TRIP?
Yup, that happened this afternoon! We headed straight for the drop off (our favorite wild life hotspot to start our search this time of year, it’s the edge off the continental shelf where the water goes from 350ft deep to over 1000ft deep in just minutes of travel) where we immediately spotted a huge pod of feeding long beaked common dolphins. Off in the distance we noticed a spout! Upon arrival we realized this humpback whale was ROLLING AROUND IN THE KELP! Like a cat rolling around in a fresh patch of catnip, but and 60,000 pound whale in the ocean. It’s quite the spectacle and had the entire boat cooing, in awe. We spent quite some time admiring this adorable whale before it was time to head home. Right before we were approaching home territory an ENORMOUS splash erupted from the ocean ahead of where we were pointed. We continued in that direction and watched the same whale breach OVER AND OVER again! When it was done breaching it began pec slapping which looks a bit like a rotating backstroke. Again, everyone on the boat – frozen in awe. Our sunset trip was stunning as well, we found THOUSANDS of dolphins, a Bryde’s whale and a humpback whale all feeding in the same area. It was magic out here tonight!
Hope we see you soon and have the opportunity to share this magical place with you.
