There’s something so special about Sunday Funday on the Ohana! We had a fun-filled and action-packed day on the water today. Our morning trip started off a bit foggy, however, visibility improved as we headed out further west and navigated through patches of fog. We had no shortage of dolphins on our morning trip! We found at least ~500 long-beaked common dolphins throughout the trip. On our afternoon trip, we headed up north towards La-Jolla and quickly encountered a pod of ~100 long-beaked common dolphins located less than ~1 mile offshore near Crystal Pier. Then, we headed up north towards La Jolla and encountered pod after pod of long-beaked common dolphins! We found about ~500 long-beaks spread throughout the trip. We also saw lots of bird piles of shearwaters, terns and California brown pelicans. Then, we travelled south along the drop-off and found an adorable & spunky pod of ~150 short-beaked common dolphins! They were launching out of the water and we saw so many calves.
Our sunset trip was such a special treat!! It felt as if we were witnessing an episode of NAT GEO in live action! We headed southwest and encountered a small pod of long-beaked common dolphins which led us to a massive feeding frenzy of birds and a MEGA pod of ~1000 long-beaked common dolphins. Then, when we least expected it, we spotted a SPOUT! The sun illuminated the spout making it very easy to see even from a distance. We got closer to the general area and hung out with the feeding frenzy of birds, LB common dolphins and the humpback whale for a good amount of time. The humpback whale even started to vertical lunge feed, and showed its pectoral flippers a few times!
Every trip is different, and we are so happy to welcome our migrating humpback whale friends as they make their way down south to Mexico. Please come join us soon, you won’t want to miss out! 🙂
