Humpback, Common dolphins, and feeding frenzies oh my!
We had a wonderful swelly trip aboard the Privateer! We set out to the NW, passed the drop-off and in 2000-ft of water we sighted a HUGE pod of Long-beaked Common dolphins! We nearly had a MEGAPOD that surrounded our boat! It was BREATHTAKING to see so many interacting with each other AND the boat! We got great looks at the baby dolphins too! There were quite a bit of birds following the dolphins. At the end of our sighting, we noticed they began to feed on the scattered bait balls. We began to leave the area when Captain Bryan spotted a spout! It belonged to a spotted juvenile HUMPBACK whale! It was following the Common dolphins and the birds to the west! We got quick but GREAT looks as it popped up beside our boat! It was only 20-ft from our boat on the last surfacing! We were able to clearly see the blowholes, the scars from barnacles, and the beautiful tail flukes when it went down for its dive! We waved goodbye and cruised in with the waves!
Come join us soon and help us search for our next Gray whale!
