San Diego, CA – April 3, 2025 – San Diego Whale Watch recently reported this year’s first sighting of a magnificent Blue Whale off the coast of San Diego. This exciting event marks the start of the 2025 whale-watching season, reminding us that San Diego is a year-round whale-watching destination. While Blue Whales are typically seen from May through September, San Diego offers the opportunity to witness these majestic creatures and other marine life throughout the year.
The Blue Whale, the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth, was spotted during a recent excursion aboard one of San Diego Whale Watch’s guided tours. Guests aboard the boat were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience as they witnessed the majestic creature spouting in the crystal-clear waters of the coastline.
“The ocean has been doing some silly stuff this year; we’ve observed some patterns appearing earlier this year than most,” said Alison Moors, a San Diego Whale Watch Naturalist. “This could be a one-off, or it could be a sign of whales to come!”
Marine experts suggest that this early sighting could be attributed to shifts in ocean temperatures and currents. El Niño conditions, which bring warmer waters to the Pacific, can sometimes lead to changes in whale migration patterns. Additionally, increased food availability, such as krill, may encourage Blue Whales to travel through the region earlier than usual.
Typically, San Diego Whale Watch records dozens of Blue Whale sightings each season, with some whales lingering for extended periods. Blue Whales can reach lengths of up to 100 feet and weigh as much as 200 tons, making them a breathtaking sight for lucky onlookers. Fun fact: a Blue Whale’s heart can be as large as a small car, and their calls are one of the loudest sounds made by any animal on Earth.
As the year progresses, San Diego Whale Watch’s naturalists and guides will offer tours that allow guests to experience first-hand the beauty of these creatures and other marine life, including gray whales, fin whales, dolphins, and more.
San Diego Whale Watch invites residents and visitors to experience the excitement of whale watching throughout the year. Tours are available daily and are designed to offer the best opportunities for sightings.
