WHAT THE FLUKE? There’s no way! YES, YES WAY! A BLUE WHALE!
Thanks to a call from our good friends over at Gone Whale Watching we were able to catch up to THE FIRST BLUE WHALE OF THE SEASON!
The ocean has been doing some silly stuff this year, we’ve observed some patterns appearing earlier this year than most. There was krill off the drop just last week, we don’t see this until may or June usually, & a bloom of Valella Valella is peaking right now – usually seen in April but it’s merely March! This could be a one off, or it could be a sign of whales to come! Only way we’re going to find out is to be out here lookin! We’ll be doing a ton of that with the weather finally clearing up! Short beaked common dolphins made an appearance on both of our early trips today! Shorties are an absolute blast to observe! Their antics never get old – you can almost see them punkin each other – tail slapping, shoulder checking each other and ROCKETING high into the sky!
We’re lookin forward to whatever else we can find out there! One more trip to go, so check back later for the juicy details!
( The sky is primed for an epic sunset – tons of whispy cirrus clouds up high in the atmosphere just waiting to catch fire in the last rays of the day)
On today’s sunset trip, we made a big loop heading southbound first and then north along the drop-off! We found an awesome pod of ~250 long-beaked common dolphins! They were STAMPEDING and travelling super fast along the boat! It was great to see so many calves (baby dolphins) in the pod! We also saw so many Velella-velellas and 3 Mola-molas! We have more fun coming up tomorrow so please stay tuned!
