We had FIN-tastic day on the water! The Fin whales are here in San Diego! Plenty of krill in the water that they are feeding on!

On our afternoon trip, we set out to the SW and spotted a single Fin whale about 8-miles from Mission bay! We were excited to see its tall columnar spout from afar! It was a bit out of reach due to some Navy operations underway. So we ventured to the NE in search for more wildlife! Along the way, we spotted a huge raft of California sea lions that were headed south!

During our sunset trip, we cruised back out to the SW and only a couple miles from Mission bay, we sighted a feeding frenzy! There were birds diving into the water and underneath were some very active Long-beaked Common dolphins! They breached and porpoised to the north. We continued out to the SW and spotted some big dolphins splashes! While en route to the pod, a spout appeared before our eyes! We hung out with a Fin whale! Then another larger Fin whale surfaced to the east, closer to the coast! We were thrilled to have a Fin whale on each side of the boat! We turned to the Short-beaked Common dolphins for a quick look and turned in. On our way home, another fin whale surfaced in front of us. We had to wait it out, as we didn’t want to get too close too fast and potentially spook it! We sighted it and continued home! The sunset was amazing! We had one more quick sighting of ~30 Long-beaked Common dolphins!

We hope you’ll join us soon for the Fin whale palooza we’re having!
