For the Privateers sunset cruise we set out north towards La Jolla peninsula for 8 miles and encountered a young humpback resting in the water. Humpbacks have the ability to practice unihemisperic sleep, meaning they can rest one hemisphere of their brain at a time, which is an incredibly useful survival strategy for a creature who must manually take each breath at the surface. Guests got to enjoy watching this juvenile circle our boat and hear its quiet breaths as it rose out of the water several times.
