After having to cancel our trip yesterday due to weather, we were back on the water for two trips today. Between both trips we saw five shy gray whales (four southbound and one northbound yearling), 30 Pacific white-sided dolphins, and a few inshore bottlenose dolphins, but the real highlight of the day was a megapod of common dolphins spotted on the morning trip. This group of at least 1,000 played near the boat for an extended period of time and displayed some impressive acrobatics!
In other news, there was a confirmed sighting of false killer whales near La Jolla earlier this afternoon by a NOAA vessel. They eluded us today but you just never know WHAT you’ll see out there! Lots of space tomorrow – are you feeling lucky?
