We had a once-in-lifetime experience today hanging out with more than 15 blue whales located about 12 miles offshore! Our morning trip started off with encountering 15 bottlenose dolphins and a massive feeding frenzy with a large bait ball of schooling fish, California sealions and ~150 long-beaked common dolphins. We also saw one blue whale in the morning. During our afternoon trip, we were surrounded by ~15 blue whales including one juvenile blue whale. Several of the whales showed their flukes. It was dophinitely a magical experience and the sun came out as well! There’s more to come during our sunset trip so please stay tuned.
SUNSET UPDATE!
We had so many blue whales out there we actually lost track and stopped counting at 12! At one point we had 5 whales surfacing in unison ahead of us, two whales on our port side and a few in the distance off starboard! To say the trip was spectacular is a vast understatement! Some long beaked common dolphins joined the party with all the blue whales and gave us a quick show before we had to head back to shore. The skies were clear and we were graced with a pretty special sunset!
