The dolphin party continues! The saw both long and short beaked common dolphins today. Straight out of the jetties we encountered a pod of long beaked common dolphin, about 50 of them all feeding on baitfish. Continuing west, we were able to locate a pod of nearly 500 short beaked common dolphins splashing up a storm! I We’re starting to see more baitfish coming into the area – some boils of fish, more and more sea birds! We found a large kelp paddy with both mahi and yellow tail swimming just below it. The ocean is brewing up something out there! We’ve just got to be patient to see what’s to come in the coming weeks.
The Sunset trip today was teaming with life!! Leaving Mission Bay we were escorted by a singular coastal bottlenose dolphin. While basking in the glorious Friday afternoon sun we came across an energetic pod of long-beaked common dolphins! Shortly after leaving them we were surprised for a minke whale! Great sign of seasonal change! The minke was feeding on anchovies which we could see flashing through the water while elegant terns dived after them. The icing on the cake and the perfect start to the weekend was an amazing pod of over 500 short-beaked common dolphins stampeding over the drop off! You would have thought they’d been watching the Olympics by how they were jumping and flipping out of the water. I’d give them gold.
